Legal IT
Independent managed service provider for NZ law firms. IT support, cybersecurity, backup, and legal software advice for firms of all types and sizes.
Managed IT services for NZ law firms
Cybersecurity & Compliance Monitoring
Law firms hold sensitive client information and trust account funds, which makes them a genuine target for phishing and business email compromise. Valley IT monitors and manages the security controls that matter most: email filtering, endpoint protection, access controls, and multi-factor authentication, configured with the compliance and confidentiality obligations specific to legal practice in mind. You get ongoing monitoring, not a one-off security review that goes stale within months.
Legal Software Expertise
We give independent advice on what software works best for your firm. We support all major Practice Management Systems including Affinity, InfinityLaw, LegalOffice, ActionStep, OneLaw and Leap. Valley IT have also introduced and supported modern AI based dictation solutions to increase in house efficiency and free up admin staff.
Helpdesk & Remote IT Support
Day-to-day IT problems slow a law firm down fast — a locked-out user, a printer that won't talk to the network, a laptop that needs setting up before a new hire starts Monday. Valley IT provides responsive helpdesk and remote support for your whole team, with technicians who already understand legal software and how a law firm's systems fit together, so issues get resolved without you having to explain your practice management setup from scratch every time.
Practice Management Software Consulting
Independent guidance on PMS selection and migration. We have helped firms migrate from InfinityLaw, Lawbase, Affinity and other legacy NZ systems. We facilitate and assist firms in adopting modern solutions such as OneLaw, Leap and more. Valley IT plans and manages the move to other modern cloud platforms, covering data migration, user provisioning, security configuration, and other areas not covered by your PMS vendor.
Backup & Disaster Recovery
A ransomware incident or a failed server shouldn't mean lost client files or weeks of downtime. Valley IT sets up and tests backup systems for your firm's documents, email, and practice management data, with a clear recovery plan so everyone knows what happens if something goes wrong. Backups are checked, not just scheduled and forgotten, because a backup you've never tested to restore from isn't a backup you can rely on.
Device Management
Valley IT ensures every laptop meets consistent security standards, encryption, access controls, and compliance settings enforced automatically rather than left to chance. Lost or stolen devices can be wiped remotely, and new starters get a working, secure setup on day one instead of an ad hoc one built from memory. Easy and secure as it should be.
Trusted by NZ law firms

I've worked with Daniel for the past four years, first in a previous role and now through Valley IT, and he's been a genuine pleasure to deal with throughout. He's responsive, knowledgeable, and reliable — the kind of managed services partner you can pick up the phone to and know things will be sorted. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

How it works
- 01
Conversation & assessment
We start with a conversation about where your firm is now: current IT setup, pain points, and what's not working. If you have an existing provider, we review what's in place before recommending any changes.
- 02
Proposal & onboarding
You get a clear proposal scoped to your firm's size and systems, with a single fixed monthly rate. Onboarding is scheduled around your firm, including handover from an outgoing provider if that applies, so there's no gap in support.
- 03
Ongoing managed support
From there, it's the day-to-day: helpdesk support, security monitoring, backups, and a technology partner who already knows your systems when something needs deciding.
Common questions
What is legal IT consulting?
Legal IT consulting is specialist technology advice for law firms. It covers practice management software selection and migration, cloud strategy, legal software evaluation, and long-term IT planning, all applied to the specific workflows, compliance requirements, and software ecosystem of legal practice. Valley IT provides this exclusively for NZ law firms.
Do you have vendor relationships with practice management software providers?
No. Valley IT has no referral arrangements, reseller agreements, or commercial relationships with any practice management software vendor. This means our advice is based solely on what fits your firm's requirements, not on which vendor pays the highest referral fee.
What practice management systems do NZ law firms use?
The most common practice management systems in use by NZ law firms include OneLaw, LEAP, Actionstep, Clio, Infinitylaw, and FilePro. Legacy systems still in use include Affinity and Lawmaster. Each has different strengths around NZ trust accounting compliance, cloud architecture, pricing, and integration with legal software tools. Valley IT evaluates all of them without bias.
How do I know when it's time to move to a new practice management system?
Common indicators include: your current system no longer receiving active development or support (as with legacy systems like Affinity and older versions of Infinitylaw), your team spending significant time on workarounds, a lack of cloud access for remote work, or difficulty integrating with modern tools. Valley IT can assess your current setup and advise on whether migration makes sense and when.
Can you help us migrate from a legacy legal software system?
Yes. Valley IT supports migrations from legacy practice management systems including Affinity, Lawmaster, FilePro, and older Infinitylaw deployments. We manage the IT infrastructure changes that run alongside the software vendor's legal data migration, covering Microsoft 365, network shares, user provisioning, and security, so the migration is coordinated and the firm keeps running throughout.
How does your pricing work?
Valley IT charges a fixed monthly retainer based on the number of users and devices in your firm, on one flat rate. You get a single predictable invoice each month rather than itemised charges for every callout. The retainer covers ongoing managed support; one-off project work, like a PMS migration, is scoped and quoted separately.
What's included in your managed IT support?
The managed IT retainer covers helpdesk and remote support, cybersecurity and compliance monitoring, backup and disaster recovery, and Microsoft 365 and device management through Intune. Firms that also want practice management or legal software advice get that as part of the same relationship, not a separate engagement with a different provider.
How do you handle security and compliance for law firms?
Law firms carry client confidentiality obligations and regulatory and compliance requirements specific to legal practice, including trust account security, that a general IT provider won't always account for. Valley IT configures and monitors security controls with those obligations in mind, covering email security, endpoint protection, access controls, and external file-sharing governance.
